With reference to Your Lordship's confidential

despatch of the 15th of May, 1931, regarding Sir Miles Lampson's despatch No. 8 Tour Series of the 11th of March,

1931, I have the honour to forward for Your Lordship's

information the accompanying copy of my reply to Sir

Miles Lampson, together with a copy of the letter from

the Vice-Chancellor of the Hong Kong University referred

to therein. As indicated in this correspondence I am

in favour of increasing the Chinese element in Hong Kong

University so far as is practicable, having due regard

to the necessary qualifications.

2.

Sir William Hornell was invited to serve on the

Board of Trustees for the Administration in China of the

Boxer Indemnity Fund and, with my concurrence as

Chancellor of the University, accepted the invitation.
